Challenge

Consumer genetic sequencing companies today have centralized access and control over an individual’s genetic data. They anonymize, sell, and sometimes resell this data to third party labs, without fine-grained revocation abilities by end users.

Solution

Genobank is using Hedera Hashgraph to create a trusted, timestamped chain-of-custody log for encrypted genetic data, while enforcing secure access control between end users and third parties.

Public blockchain and distributed ledger technologies open the door to consumer privacy across the web like never before, enabling true ownership of user data and the ability for an individual to take back control. It’s an especially important time for this technology, as it arrived in conjunction with inexpensive, at-home genetic sequencing — as of today, over 26 million people globally have shared their DNA with companies running these genetic analyses.*

Genetic data is by far one of the most sensitive and private pieces of information, for which we now have the ability to own, analyze, and share across the web. There’s an incredible amount of good that can come from it, like personalized medicine, research on genetic disease and mutations, biometric access control, and more. But it doesn’t come without risks, like astronomical insurance premiums for genetically predisposed individuals, sale and resale of data without consent, and theft from data breaches.

Genobank’s mission is to deliver the upsides of at-home genetic sequencing and research, while mitigating downsides attributed to data privacy. Genobank had originally created their proof-of-concept project with Counterparty and the Bitcoin blockchain, but quickly recognized their limitations around speed and scalability, as well as high network fees. They ended up choosing Hedera to append two functional use cases:

The first is the creation of non-fungible token for each genetic testing kit result (Genobank are calling these tokens BioNFTs) — this token becomes the identity for an individual's genetic dataset, while the data itself is encrypted and stored in a repository such as Amazon S3 or IPFS. This token can be used to uniquely identify a user with only 96 SNPs — there are roughly 4 - 5 million SNPs in human DNA, but only 96 are required for unique identification. Using non-fungible tokens, users can authorize and revoke access by third parties such as physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and data scientists, while retaining their privacy and even receiving compensation in certain cases.

The second is using Hedera Consensus Service to prove every action taken on an individual's genetic data, such as temporary access and expiration — using Hedera’s proof-of-action microservice, Genobank will be able to generate a trusted, immutable, and timestamped log. This log will also ensure that companies and labs are abiding by consumer privacy protection laws, such as GDPR and CCPA, around the deletion (or revocation of access) of identifiable user data. And it can act as a full chain-of-custody, akin to the way Hedera Consensus Service is used for supply chain applications.
