Carbon Offset Certificates

Hedera has adopted environmental sustainability as a core value and is officially committed to carbon-negative network operations by purchasing carbon offsets quarterly, with amounts determined by the third-party assessment provider Terrapass.

Emissions assessments are determined at the end of every quarter and credits, accounting for uptrends in network usage, are purchased to offset the subsequent quarter. The verification report generated by Terrapass, which has been hashed on the Hedera Consensus Service ("HCS"), validates carbon captured through the Lebanon Refuse Authority Landfill Gas Collection and Combustion Project.

This decision was made by members of the Hedera Governing Council after careful deliberation, and we are hopeful this decision serves as inspiration for other public networks to adopt sustainable operating practices. The emissions included in these assessment stem from all public-facing infrastructure, as found on the Hedera Status Page.
